How to split a PDF online

  1. Drop your PDF on the dropzone above (or click Choose PDF).
  2. Pick a split mode — one PDF per page, custom page ranges, or every N pages.
  3. Click "Split PDF." The split runs locally in your browser; nothing is uploaded.
  4. Download the result. A single output PDF downloads directly; multiple outputs come bundled in a zip.

When the desktop app is the better choice

If you're processing hundreds or thousands of PDFs at once, want watched-folder automation, or need command-line scripting for a recurring job, the browser is the wrong tool. The Multi PDF Splitter desktop app processes batch jobs that would crash a browser tab — and it has no file-size cap because it streams from disk.

Splitting hundreds or thousands of PDFs?

The desktop edition handles batch jobs, folder watching, command-line scripting, and unlimited file sizes.

Need to do something else with your PDFs?

The Essex Software catalog covers the rest of the document workflow:

Merge PDFs

Combine many PDFs into one organized document — drag to reorder pages, set a custom filename.

Batch PDF Merger →

Convert PDFs to images

Bulk convert PDF↔JPG, PDF↔PNG, AVIF, WebP — preserving page order and quality.

Turn off your Wi-Fi. It still works.

That's how you know nothing ever leaves your computer.

Legal contracts. Medical records. Financial reports. Engineering drawings. All stay on your computer. iLovePDF, Smallpdf, and Adobe make you upload your PDF first. We don't.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF splitter free?

Yes. The browser version is free — no account, no signup, no watermark, no per-file fee. We make money on the optional Multi PDF Splitter desktop app for power users who need batch automation across thousands of files.

Are my PDFs uploaded to a server?

No. The split runs entirely in your browser. You can disconnect from Wi-Fi after the page loads — the tool keeps working.

What's the file size limit?

No size cap. Multi-thousand-page PDFs work fine on a normal laptop. For massive batch jobs, the desktop edition has no limits.

How do I split a PDF into specific page ranges?

Choose Custom page ranges from the Split mode dropdown, then enter ranges separated by commas — for example 1-3, 5, 7-10 produces three output PDFs (pages 1–3, page 5, and pages 7–10).

Will the output PDFs lose quality?

No. The output PDFs match the original exactly — text stays selectable, images stay sharp, and signatures and fonts are preserved.

How is this different from the Multi PDF Splitter desktop app?

Same engine family, different use case. The browser version is best for one-off splits, single documents, and when you don't want to install anything. The desktop app is built for batch automation (split 1,000 PDFs in one job), watched folders, command-line scripting, and unlimited file size. See the desktop edition →

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

If the PDF has owner-level encryption that blocks page extraction, the splitter will report an error. You'll need to remove the password first in the original application (Acrobat, Preview, etc.) and then split the unprotected copy. Most everyday PDFs are not encrypted.

Does it work on iPhone, iPad, or Android?

Yes. Modern mobile browsers (Safari 15+, Chrome on Android) run the splitter fine. Add to Home Screen to install it as an app — it works offline after the first visit and there's no App Store approval required.
