FAQ

Do you upload my files or store my password?

No. Encryption happens entirely inside your browser tab — there is no upload and no server. Your password is never transmitted or stored anywhere. Verify it: disconnect from Wi-Fi after the page loads and the tool keeps working.

Will the encrypted ZIP open in Windows Explorer?

No — and that's true of every properly encrypted ZIP, not just ours. Windows Explorer and the macOS built-in unzipper only support the obsolete legacy zip encryption, which is easily cracked. To open an AES-256 ZIP, the recipient needs a free app like 7-Zip (Windows) or Keka (Mac). If your recipient can't install anything, send them a vault file instead — it opens in any web browser.

What is the vault (.html) file?

A single file that contains your encrypted files plus a built-in unlock page. The recipient opens it in any browser — on any device — types the password, and can view and save the files. No software to install, and it works even offline. It uses AES-256 with a deliberately slow password check (600,000 rounds) that makes guessing attacks extremely expensive.

What if I forget the password?

The files are unrecoverable — by design. We never see your password, so there is nothing to reset and nobody to call. That's exactly what makes the protection real. Write the password down somewhere safe before you send the file.

Can the password be cracked?

The AES-256 encryption itself can't be cracked — but a weak password can be guessed by someone who has the file. A dictionary word falls in hours; a random 12+ character password or a multi-word passphrase holds for centuries. Why don't you offer the "compatible" legacy zip encryption?

Because it doesn't protect anything. The legacy ZipCrypto format that Windows Explorer can open has been broken for decades — cracking tools defeat it regardless of how strong your password is. We only produce real AES-256. If recipient convenience matters, use the vault file.

Is there a size limit?

Encrypted .zip output: no fixed cap — your device's memory is the practical limit, and desktops handle multi-GB archives. The vault file is capped at 50 MB of input (a browser limitation); above that, use the .zip output.

Can I password-protect an existing .zip file?
