🔒 What we collect — and what we don't

GlutenCheck does not collect your name, email, phone, photos, or any personally identifying information. The app uses anonymous usage analytics to improve the product, and queries public food databases (Open Food Facts, USDA) when you scan a barcode. Ingredient-label photos are processed entirely on your device.

Overview

GlutenCheck ("we", "our", or "the app"), published by Essex Software, LLC, respects your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains what GlutenCheck does — and does not — collect.

What We Collect

Anonymous Usage Analytics

To improve the app, we collect anonymous metrics about how it's used:

None of this data is tied to your identity. We do not know, and cannot determine, whether you have celiac disease or any other medical condition — the strictness profile is a filter setting, and we record only which setting is active, never who selected it.

Apple Search Ads Attribution

If you tap an Apple Search Ads result and install GlutenCheck, the app performs a one-time check at install to determine whether you arrived via that channel. This is used only to measure marketing effectiveness, not to identify you.

Product Data You Help Us Capture

When you scan a barcode that isn't in any public database and then scan the ingredient label to rescue it, GlutenCheck sends that pairing — the barcode number and the ingredient text it read — to our server, so the next person who scans that product gets an instant answer. This record contains product information only. It carries no identifier for you, no device ID, and no location.

Purchase Records

GlutenCheck's free plan includes 10 scans per month. The optional Lifetime Unlock is a one-time purchase that removes that limit. If you buy it, a record of the transaction is stored on our server for accounting purposes. The record contains the product purchased, country, and a transaction ID — no name, email, or payment details.

What We Do NOT Collect

How the Scanner Works

Barcode Scans

When you scan a product barcode:

Ingredient-Label Scans

When you scan an ingredient label with the camera:

The Classifier Runs on Your Device

The gluten ruleset — every ingredient, alias, and verdict rule — ships inside the app. Deciding whether a product contains gluten never requires a network request, which is why GlutenCheck works in a supermarket aisle with no signal. We never see what you scanned or what verdict you got.

Local Storage

Your scan history is saved on your device only:

Permissions Required

Camera Access

GlutenCheck requires camera access to scan barcodes and ingredient labels. Camera permissions are:

Third-Party Services

GlutenCheck uses the following third-party services. We do not share, sell, or rent your data with any of them.

In-App Purchases

GlutenCheck's free plan includes 10 scans per month. One optional Non-Consumable purchase is offered:

Disclaimer

GlutenCheck is an informational tool. It is not medical advice, and it is not a gluten-free certification authority. Our analysis is based on ingredient databases and public regulatory guidance (the FDA gluten-free labeling rule and FALCPA allergen labeling). While we strive for accuracy, results may be incomplete or outdated, ingredient lists change without notice, and cross-contact cannot be determined from a label alone.

Precautionary allergen statements such as "may contain wheat" are voluntary in the United States. The absence of such a statement is not evidence that a product is safe. If you have celiac disease or a wheat allergy, verify critical products with the manufacturer, look for a certified gluten-free mark such as GFCO, and consult your physician or registered dietitian. When in doubt, leave it out.

Children's Privacy

GlutenCheck is suitable for all ages and does not knowingly collect data from children under 13. We do not collect personal information from any user, regardless of age.

Summary

GlutenCheck collects no personally identifying information. We use anonymous usage analytics to improve the product, query public ingredient databases when you scan a barcode, and process ingredient-label photos entirely on your device. Your photos and scan history stay on your phone, and the gluten classifier itself runs offline.
